Description

District in the north of Bradford, West Yorkshire. The Exley family had a significant presence here from the early 17th century onwards, particularly through Samuel of Manningham and his descendants.

Historical Context

Samuel Exley of Manningham (the first generation from Robert of Halifax) married Anne Illingworth of Bradford in 1626 and lived at Manningham where all their children were registered (Bradford Registers). Later generations continued in the Manningham/Bradford area as worsted spinners and manufacturers.

John Exley (1814-1877), a worsted spinner, lived at Valley Field House, Hillam Road, Manningham until 1872. The house was later sold to the Midland Railway Co. and Manningham Station was built on the site.
