Biography
Samuel Exley of Manningham and Halifax. Yeoman. First generation from Robert Exley of Halifax (d.1647). Fourth son and second son [sic] of Robert. Mentioned in the deed of Indenture 1673 as “late deceased.”
From the Bradford Registers: Samuel married Anne Illingworth of Bradford in 1626. Samuel and Anne lived at Manningham; all their children were registered there. Afterwards they removed to Halifax.
Note: The death date of 1650 on Meryll’s tree conflicts with the Chronicle which says he was “late deceased” as of a 1673 deed and gives his death date as 1673. The Chronicle date of 1673 is used here as it cites a documentary reference.
Children (from the Chronicle)
- Ethel b. 1641
- Dorothy b. 1623, m. John Brooke of Armley 1654
- Margaret b. 1626
- Samuel b. 1625 [sic], m. Mary Harrison of Rawdon, 17th February 1656
- Joshua b. 1629
Note: Meryll’s tree gives different names and dates for some children (Sibyl 1621, Dorothy 1624, Robert 1627, Samuel 1630, Joshua 1640). The Chronicle’s dates need verification against parish registers as some appear internally inconsistent (e.g. Dorothy born 1623 before parents’ marriage in 1626).
